Eddie Adams Application.

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Well, I finally got my Eddie Adams application in. From their website -

“The Eddie Adams Workshop is an intense four-day gathering of the top professionals in photojournalism, along with 100 carefully selected students. The Workshop’s purpose is to create a forum in which an exchange of ideas, techniques, and philosophies can be shared between both established members and newcomers of the profession of picture journalism. The Workshop is tuition-free, and the 100 students are chosen based on the merit of their portfolios.”

The deadline extension came in handy, and for another year, I have my fingers crossed to get into this amazing workshop. Link here: http://www.eddieadamsworkshop.com/

Here are the photos I submitted for my portfolio. Once the site has loaded, click the photo to open the entire set in a flash gallery.

A couple of shots from Tuesday.

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

A couple of photographs today, one from an assignment in Vancouver about a young girl who raises funds by collecting pop cans so that she can pay to mark the graves of War Veterans in Vancouver. Without her work, the graves are simply marked by a small ceramic disc which has a number on it. Also, another shot of a few local Richmond guys who really enjoy smoking cigars and were a tad bit worried by city council’s efforts to ban smoking from establishments.

Amanda Neil looks down at the grave of George Staples Sapper in the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. His is one of the Veterans’ graves she has marked by raising money by collecting pop cans and raising money in the community. Neil was affected by the passing of “Smokey” Smith in 2005 and set out do something. robustocigar1.jpg

Cigar aficionados Jack Menard, (foreground) and Robert Angus, (centre) smoke cigars outside of Robusto at #160-13020 No. 2 Road in Richmond. The premium cigar store and cafe is hoping for an exemption to Richmond’s anti-smoking bylaws.

If only desserts were always right.

I don’t normally take these into consideration, but I like the one I got recently while going out for dinner with Vancouver-based photojournalist Wendell Phillips

It reminded me of a scene in one of my favourite Simpsons episodes, entitled “The Last Temptation of Homer”

Mindy: What's wrong?
Homer: Oh, yeah, like you don't know. [weeping] We're gonna have sex!
Mindy: Oh...well, we don't have to.Homer: [sad] Yes we do! The cookie told me so.

Mindy: Well...desserts aren't always right.
Homer: But they're so sweet!

Fortune Cookies, they are so smart.

Some great storytelling, great layout, and great black and white photography. This is a site I am definitely going to keep my eye on.

Recent Corporate Gig.

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Here are a few shots from a recent corporate gig I did for Labor Ready, a Seattle-based company who has temporary staffing firms across North America. This was a typical shoot with minimal time to do each shot, the three employees had to leave the location for about 5 minutes to get all the shots and get back in to deal with the people who were looking for a day’s work.

Up in Kamloops

An attempt at a star trails shot, but it was too close to the boomin’ fire we had raging that night. This was up in Knutsford, B.C. right outside of Kamloops. I kind of like the effect from the fire on either side.
