Another shot from a project I am working on at the Richmond News, which will hopefully run in the coming weeks. Rick Hansen is a hero and inspiration to many, and is a Canadian icon. In this brief interview he explains his history and some of the work that the Rick Hansen Foundation is doing.

Celebration of light in 8 seconds.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I grabbed a lightstand and my camera out of the back of my car on the way back into Vancouver last night, and met up with some friends to take in the fireworks. There was no wind, so the smoke seemed to just sit out in English Bay, which made it fairly difficult to get decent shots, but here is a time-lapse of 100 shots in 8 seconds.

On the high seas.

Friday, July 25th, 2008

I was lucky enough to go cruising around in English Bay with Jed and Kel the other day, and we originally going to take a smaller 3-person sailboat, which would have been difficult for my camera, but we ended up taking out the big boat, and thank god! The winds picked up a soon as we got out on the ocean, had a few beers, snapped a few photos, nothing better! Ah, Vancouver, what a city.

The Chief.

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

One of the most brilliant things about Vancouver is being able to escape the city relatively easily.  The Chief in Squamish is one of my favourite hikes around town, it has one of the most brilliant views of any spot around Vancouver.  I took a swim in the glacier-fed stream/waterfall on the way down, the best way to cool off on a scorcher of a day.

Winning Portfolio at BVJC.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I was very lucky to have the opportunity to meet with some amazing photographers on Saturday night to have them review my portfolio at the Bellingham Visual Journalism Confernce. I had some very valuable feedback from Andy Clark (Reuters Vancouver), Jay Drowns (The Sporting News staff photographer), Renée Byer (2007 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography), Dean Rutz (Seattle Times staffer) and Karen Ducy(Seattle Post-Intelligencer staffer). After the review session, all of the reviewers get in a room and decide who to award as the best professional portfolio and best student portfolio. I was awarded best professional portfolio. A perfect end to a great weekend and another great year at the BVJC.

Here is the slideshow that Mikael Kjellstrom and I produced on Friday at the Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference. We took about twenty minutes to figure out what to shoot, an hour to shoot it, and two hours to edit it. Click the photo to load the slideshow.

A recent project

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I haven’t been good at posting much lately, but I do have a lot of pictures I have been taking recently. Here is an audio portrait of Vic, one of the people involved in my current project using black and white photographs on my Hasselblad. He has had a very interesting life. Feedback always welcome, and there will be more in the future.

I realized that my love affair with horses that was kindled on my trip to the Big Island hasn’t gone away.  It was very cool seeing this guy run down the miles of empty beach, and gave me an idea for a shoot one day.
