Thursday, August 21st, 2008I realized recently I haven’t posted any of my photography from my work as a Staff Photographer at the Richmond News for quite some time. I guess the timing of my decision to take off to Rwanda wasn’t too random at all, as my focus in photography has drifted to some of my outside personal and freelance work. Anyways, here is a very simple portrait I made today of artist Jason Froese. His work is based on historical photographic images of prospectors and colonialists from Western Canada, and is some of the cooler art I have seen on the job.

Check out Tim Gruber’s blog http://www.timgruber.com/blog/2008/08/13/fear-of-failure/
He talks about something that I think about quite a bit, and probably everyone else at some point or to some degree. Overcoming failure is a huge element in life and those who roll with the punches will probably get the most out of it. Looking back to many months ago when I was passed up for the Jack Websters Seeing Through New Eyes Fellowship I thought my chances of going to Africa were pretty dismal. But now, I’m off, doing it my own way, and I couldn’t be happier.
Have fun with your camera.
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008I watched a great interview with Charlie Rose and Henri Cartier-Bresson tonight. Not only are the guy’s pictures beyond words, but his whole attitude is just amazing. And truly, photography is such a simple thing. It’s putting what your eyes see inside a a box and pressing a button. After telling myself I was going to edit photos all day Sunday, I went out and took photos for me. For fun. Sometimes I get too caught up in the “work” of taking pictures when I have an assignment or a job, and it stops being so much fun, and I can’t let that mentality get to me. Hopefully the coming trip to Rwanda to teach photography will continue to open my eyes to the way I, and others, see the world. Thanks guys for a great day.
